    Microsuede Jersey | Latest Release

Happy New Year! We are so excited to start the year off introducing a new fabric to the shop!

Our newest arrival, Microsuede Jersey, embraces all of our favorite things about texture (interest, feel, elevated look, etc) and takes it one step further with an incredibly soft feel. We have quickly come to love the versatility this fabric offers with its opacity, drape, and stretch. Want to see and hear more about it? Read on for sewing inspiration and the thoughts from our team!

"This Microsuede jersey is like a hug and kiss from your favorite person. It's soft, drapey and has a wonderful stretch. I made the Sinclair Patterns Iris and Bondi top and bishop sleeves as my base to create a fun and flirty dress. I also made the Sinclair Soho top as an added top. This is the perfect dress up and casual base to create many looks."

"This microsuede jersey is such a luxurious fabric! It is so buttery soft and it can be used to make a wide variety of garments! I had recently seen a wrap style crop top that I decided to try and make my own version of and I love how this fabric gives it such an elevated look! I used the Sonia Estep Designs Hollywood bodice, lengthened a little bit and I used the bishop sleeves from their Katharine pattern. I created the ties using their Samantha tie pattern pieces and constructed this top similar to how the Samantha is sewn. This fabric is definitely a must-have for the winter season!"

"The microfiber is a fun fabric to work with if you want the texture of suede but work primarily with knits. Because of the suede-like texture and the light weight of the fabric, it plays well with the light and creates a look that reminds me of washed silk. Once I noticed that, I knew I wanted to make a blouse with a vintage feel to showcase that beautiful drape. I used the Betty from Sinclair as my base, added the puffed sleeves from the Bondi 22 add-on pack, then drafted a full circle peplum. The fabric does not fray or curl so I chose to not hem the skirt."

"There’s a new fabric in town at Surge Fabric Shop and it’s one that you will want to get! Introducing Microsuede Jersey in 11 color ways!!! Although it was tough deciding which patterns to use, I love this fabric for this dress. The fabric is a nice, sturdy knit with jersey properties. It stretches nicely and retains its shape. It drapes lovely, accentuating your curves like a dream. It’s opaque, so no worries about anything showing through!
Another thing that I really like about this fabric is the texture. The fabric has an ultra-soft, suede-like feel. Just remember that it has a nap! Because the microsuede fabric can look differently once it dries, it can be hard to see the nap at times. Just make sure you cut all of your pieces the same direction! Nothing sucks more than having parts of your garment look darker than other parts.
Other things worth noting include the fact that this fabric cuts nicely with minimum fuzz in your machine and it’s VERY forgiving should you have to rip out seams. This fabric washed well with no noticed shrinking issues. Steams well at a low setting. It doesn’t wrinkle easily. I used a pressing cloth on wrong side of fabric for hemming purposes.
Something to note, this fabric doesn’t scoot easily across the machine throat due to texture. A little secret , I slightly lifted the fabric away from the machine throat (as opposed to sliding it forward along with feed dogs) to help it glide through nicely.

"This microsuede is a wonderfully stretchy and drapey knit, but still opaque!! The Carissa dress from Made For Mermaids, is what I chose to showcase this incredible black colorway. The dress features a fitted paneled bodice, square neck, half circle skirt, and a lovely bishop sleeve! I made sure to use a stretch needle, one of the smaller sizes, to make sure that the stretch stitches and topstitching worked out well. I really love the fullness of the sleeve and the topstitched bodice accents. Once I put on the dress all hemmed, I decided that the "mini length" wasn't quite mini enough for my taste, so I chopped it and re-hemmed. The new length is exactly what I envisioned. This fabric is a five out of five stars, for sure. By using the right needle and taking your time, and this fabric will give you a dreamy suede look and vintage look that will leave you smitten!!"

"Microsuede, a base I didn’t know I needed but here we are! This fabric is so soft and dreamy. I could think of several patterns I’d love to use. After taking some time to think I decided on the Carissa from Made For Mermaids which was a perfect combo. This fabric elevated the sex appeal for this dress. I felt confident and comfy. I will be grappling more colors for a duster cardigan and skirt!"

"If you're just a wee bit exhauseted from all the busy holidays like me, you might want something comfy to relax with. The new microsuede fabric is great for a cozy lounge set. It's the softest material I have felt without a high pile and made the perfect Greenstyle Brassies and Sav's Sweatshirt. The fabric has a nice drape and plenty of warmth and obviously, it's SO soft. Make sure to take extra care when sewing this with a serger. Because of the fabric's texture, i had to make sure both pieces of fabric were under the presserfoot and it doesn't slide easily! Just a tiny bit of extra care will do the trick. I'll be making my daughter a lounge set next per her request!"

"If you love the feel of suede but prefer sewing with a lighter weight knit, then this Microsuede is for you! This fabric is so soft to the touch and feels amazing against the skin. It really lends itself to fitted garments so I used the Styla Lassen fitted pajamas for this Blue Jeans colorway and it makes the perfect pjs or loungewear! It has great stretch and recovery and handled both my sewing machine and serger just fine. It feels pretty substantial yet is not bulky at all, especially at the ruffled areas. It would make fantastic leggings or a bodycon style dress as well. With so many colors to choose from, I would stock up on several!"

"I've never been a robe person before, but when I got this lovely pink microsuede jersey, I had to give the robe lifestyle a try! The fabric is so soft on both sides, and it's just a little slinky, perfect for a knit dressing gown. I used the microsuede knit to sew up the P4P Cozy Wrap. This fabric makes a great lightweight robe or cardigan for layering!"

"When I source fabrics for Surge, I am always on the hunt for something new, something I haven't seen before. This microsuede jersey had a unique feel I had never come across before. It is incredibly soft, and suede to mimic the real deal without the cruelty and price tag of course! Plus it's a stretchy knit fabric! Making it so much more versatile for everyday wear. I have loved the Chalk + Notch Waterfall Raglan for a long time and this fabric was the perfect choice for Mommy & Me tops!"
